i love it. on the roads right now you are going to find lanes are open on the top stretch of the beltway. still very slow headed around silver spring. this is southbound new hampshire avenue south of the beltway. this is where we have the incident involving the bus. the inner loop of the beltway can't exit on to new hampshire avenue. move to the center and left coming from the capital beltway southbound on 650. we've also got problems here on the outer loop of the beltway. tied up the right lane on the bridge. traffic started slow south of river road. inner loop of the beltway your lanes are open. we have delays if you are traveling eastbound. even though the roads are open, below speed this morning. add extra time to this inbound commute. 16 miles an hour. move up to about 31 miles an hour headed east. well below speed. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic.

>> thanks. now to the latest development out of the middle east. new protests turned violent outside the u.s. embassy in cairo. police fired tear gas and warning shots to keep protestors away from the building. president obama has spoken with the presidents of egypt and libya. this came to a boiling point when the united states ambassador and three other americans were killed in an attack at the u.s. consulate. on its way to examine the scene. joining us now is daniel, a scholar at the advantaged of international studies at john's hopkins university. thank you for joining us this morning. the details in this troubling story, theory involving now. we're learning more now. i'd like first though your reaction to the events thus far. >> i think it's important to

understand that whatever happened was done by a very small number of people. libyans generally appreciate what the united states and nato did for them and would be very upset about what happened. i've been there twice this year and talked to people on the street and restaurants. libyans have a profound appreciation for what we did. i have to fend them off. they like to hug you a lot. even on the street. and they really express their appreciation very well. this is an unusual event in libya. >> let's talk about what we thought was the only factor in this. besides the obvious evolving march with all of the nations of the world. besides that obvious thing there. let's talk about this film. that's what we thought it was before. are you surprised that the reaction would be this strong

from a small group or not of people in libya first of all? and now we're seeing rioting in lemon and cairo as well. >> no, i'm not surprised. what is acceptable in criticizing religion is different from american standards. if it had been christianity it i'm not sure we would have reacted all that differently. this is a difficult situation where freedom of speech requires the filmmakers be entitled to make their mistakes but it has repercussions worldwide. >> we talked about the people you've met. our response now, we are sending marines there to show up our embassies there. also these two battleships are going to the region. how do we navigate our actions and

understand this is not about these two governments fighting but a small group of people? how do we square these two actions? >> it's not easy. but what we have to do is to insist the government of libya, the government of egypt and the government of lemmon protect. it's not on the u.s. marines stationed there who protect the information inside the embassies and consulates. they are not primarily responsible for protection of the outside. it's the whole government supposed to do that particularly in egypt where they have the capability. we have to insist it be done. in libya, the problem is the government doesn't have the capability. and there you need to supplement the government's capability with u.s. marines. but only temporarily. fundamentally, we have to get back to a normal situation where the host government protests our

facilities. >> we have heard that come out of cairo. the leadership there saying it forbids people to attack the embassies or the united states or properties there. >> they are saying that now. >> okay. >> they were slow to say it. the libyans were kicker to say it and apologize for what happened. egypt in my way of thinking is much more problematic situation because the government there frankly expects us to do something about this film. and i don't think we're going to do anything because that's not the role of the u.s. government. >> let's talk about that. the united states respond s. it's evolved over the course of the events that have happened. first, we heard that what some said sounded like an apology to the muslim world for this film. and then later we saw hillary clinton come out and say there's

warning about listeria tainted cheese sold locally. officials say the imported cheese of new york is linked to illnesses in 11 states. three people reported becoming sick and one person in virginia and in the district also sickened. the cheese was sold in whole foods stores and distributed to restaurants as well. whole foods said it was recalling the cheese in question from some of its stores and says all sell by dates by october 2nd are affected by this. and on monday, forever cheese issued a recall of 800 wheels of cheese. >> apple unveils the new iphone. it has a larger screen and take pan ram i can pictures -- panoramic pictures. it comes

thing as day light savings time. right now the guns just began to open the canon and firing. very difficult for us to even speak to each other because the loud noise here. >> you said when i was reading about this, this was a battle that is often lost. what do you mean by that? >> this actually is the very first battle in the state of maryland during the civil war. it was the key to harper's ferry. really held the fortress around. so they are fighting up there to determine the destiny of this campaign. >> this battle often gets overshadowed. but wouldn't have happened if this wouldn't have happened. >> really what it's all about. going into pennsylvania. the real invasion was going to be in atopen pen. couldn't get there until he got rid of the troops at harper's ferry. this stalled him and as a result of what happened here and the amount of time that was lost here, finally

the 14th street bridge. here's the outer loop delay colesville role it's gone but 30 minutes from route 1 to 355. delays southbound on i-95 as you continue to work your way out of laurel. the inner loop of the beltway slowing down to 16 miles an hour between 95 and the greenbelt metro. now for that trip southbound on i95 again, the delay from 216 down to the beltway in that backup they are checking for an accident near 198, southbound bw parkway below speed at 31 miles an hour coming in south of 198. that's a check of your "fox 5 on-time traffic.." we begin with breaking news from the middle east where violence against america continues to spread. overnight angry protestors in yemen tried to storm a u.s. embassy throwing rocks and tearing down the american flag. riot police fired tear gas into the crowd to drive them away but at this hour, the clashes continue. there are also angry protests reported this morning in other

middle east countries. besides the all night protest in egypt, we're hearing of demonstrations in morocco, sudan and tunisia this morning. those protests in egypt are the biggest and they have been going on since tuesday. the demonstrators are reportedly upset at a movie on youtube that mocks islam. but the u.s. wants to know if al qaeda also played a role in the attack that killed the american ambassador to libya. melanie alnwick joins us now live in the newsroom with the latest from this investigation. good morning, melanie. >> reporter: good morning, tony. all americans in benghazi have been evacuated and a team of elite marines have been deployed to triply. the attack on the u.s. consulate was he coordinated, not like a riot. u.s. believes the attack may have been preplanned. an al qaeda video released monday called for revenge for the killing of al qaeda's number 2 earlier this year. now, he was from libya and some believe the video may have been the trigger for the go ahead

for the attacks. ambassador chris stevens who you saw there and foreign service officer sean smith and three other americans were killed and three others wounded when the consulate was firebombed. president obama strongly condemned the attack and secretary of state hillary clinton stressed that the libyan government was not involved. >> a free and stable libya is still in america's interest and security. and we will not turn our back on that. >> in attack is a horrible attack. we condemn it. we strongly condemn this kind of attack. >> ambassador chris stevens lived in chevy chase when he was not on assignment. sean smith was an air force veteran and the married father of two young children. president obama spoke to the leaders of both egypt and libya last night. this morning, egypt's president vowed he would not allow any further attacks on foreign embassies but he also harshly criticized that film and said that he asked president obama to put an end to such behavior.

negative feedback about a new connector cable forcing users to buy new accessories. the iphone 5 officially hits stores september 21. if you pay a lot for gas, be glad you don't live near these pumps. lukoil stations in new jersey, hopefully i'm pronouncing that right, and pennsylvania, jersey and pennsylvania are charging nearly $9 for a gallon of regular to drive customers away. here's the deal. some franchise owners are using the steep prices to protest lukoil for overcharging them for gas leaving them at a competitive disadvantage. you don't have to worry about that. >> there you go. check this out, money flying from the open windows of a car in the middle of a police pursuit. the guys in the car allegedly robbed an armored car. police gave chase and the suspect started dumping the loot but these guys were no modern day robin hoods.

this is incredible when you actually see it in action. what we're talking about is ipads being brought into the classroom and into homes to help children and even adults on the autism spectrum of the so what is it about the ipad itself and i suppose other tablets would work, as well? there are so many apps that help bridge a communication gap between these children and adults and help sort of release the words that are trapped in their minds. now, research is being done as we speak about the effectiveness of this method of teaching. but what teachers and parents are really finding, i talked to one mom who said her child did not speak until he got the ipad. the beauty of it is there's a few things. first of all, it's got the touchscreen so it's instantaneous results. also it's very portable. in the past, a child or an adult would have to maybe sit in front of a computer to have a computer speak for him. instead you can carry this around. there's a coolness factor that

people talk about that a child doesn't feel different, doesn't feel weird carrying around an ipad. in fact, it's a badge of honor to carry it around. so what they're finding is that this technology is really helping to be a bridge, bridge the gap for kids. you don't want the ipad to talk for the child all the time. but there's all kinds of games about social skills, communication skills that are really having tremendous benefit. it's expensive so, you know, there's fundraisers going on all over the country, school districts are trying to buy these, parents are trying to get them in their homes because they say it's really a game changer with their kids. >> i love that. let's switch gears a bit to something that's already touted for its ability to condition your skin, moisturize your hair, help your lose weight. now new research shows that coconut oil may be what the dentist ordered , as well?

what's going on? >> it sounds like a cure-all. it used to be a villain and now it's a superstar, coconut oil high in saturated fat. this is what it looks like. so first of all let me address the weight loss issue. miranda kerr says she cooks with it. she believes it helps keep her weight down.the science there is interesting. in ireland they looked at the benefit of coconut oil or dental health. they found that coconut oil is an antibiotic and antifungal. 90% of american adults have some kind of tooth decay in our adult teeth. when we talk about coconut oil in general, it is high in saturated fat but these are medium chain fatty acids. that's important because it's

the situation is a board member of the all dulles area muslim society and cochair of the organization's interfaith government and media committee. good morning. thank you for coming in. >> thank you for having me. >> we wanted to put this in perspective and tell us some things because clearly there are some misunderstandings between the two cultures, between some who practice islam, some who are christians and some western he is who don't understand some things. let's talk about these violent attacks. your view of the attacks, your organization's view of the attacks? >> as muslims, we condemn the violence and the murdering of ambassador stevens and the three consulate officers. our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this time. we pray for security and peace of all of our american citizens in the embassies and consulates in the middle east at this time. >> we now know that that particular attack may have been planned by al qaeda on the

anniversary of september 11th so i'm going to take that out of the equation because we want to talk about the reaction to this anti-muslim film that's been made. why is the reaction so strong to any depiction of mohammed and, you know, i think some can understand any depiction that ridicules, but really any depiction of mohammed is -- is that alone complete sacrilege? is that something that's viewed very strongly by muslims? >> so for muslims, you know, if you look at the ten commandments which we are all from abrahamic roots we believe in the prophet abraham and prophet adam, in the ten commandments it says thou shalt not have glavine images. so any he -- grave end images. so any image, prophet jesus, prophet moses, not part of the tradition. people worship god not worship the prophet. and so that is the context

around it. and so but regardless, no depiction, no bad film should cause any type of violent reaction. so, you know, obviously in a rabbi and protestant minister spoke yesterday condemning the movie but if you have a problem with the movie you respond with peace and good. in the koran god told us that bad and good are not the same and you respond to bad with good and so if there is something bad and distasteful it's part of freedom of speech. we believe in freedom of speech. but we should respond from an islamic perspective with peace and good. you can have a peaceful response. you can write articles, people can write their own films, have interfaith dialogues and really respond in an appropriate manner just like when there was the threat to burn the koran. people said okay, we'll respond by doing community service or we'll give korans out for free.

let's create dialogue and learn about one another both ways mutual respect. >> so those who respond with violence, we refer to them frequently as militants. that's the correct term for those people they are on the fringe? >> absolutely. i mean, right now you see a few thousand people across three countries a tiny percentage looking for publicity. they are counterproductive by this violent response they are giving free publicity to a ridiculous movie. >> there are some similarities between -- some -- between islam and christian. you believe in jesus? >> we love jesus. there is a whole chapter in the holy koran about mary and the virgin birth of mary. we believe he is a messenger of

god. we believe he is a messiah who will return. we love them all as our prophets and guides that bring us closer to god almighty so there is great interfaith relationships between muslims, christian, jewish, hindu, buddhist, sikh and everyone in this d.c. metropolitan area. >> your particular organization as we mentioned you're chairman of interfaith services. tell me with what goes on there. >> we have many dialogues and activities for creating mutual respect. for example, this saturday i'll be speaking at a hindu tell unti chantilly. a group in washington has interfaith dialogue on a regular basis bringing people together so we can get to know one another. we sponsor community service activities to bring people together to learn about one another. we have a book about teaching about religions so we can learn about all 11 faiths.

on to our facebook page and leave a comment under his picture. we may be nearing the end of this season for petunias and gardenias but there are plenty of colorful flowers that can grace your garden even after temperatures take a nosedive. our garden expert derek thomas from thomas landscapes joins us. speaking of noses, i have a question four. what am i smelling? it is not pleasant. i'm sorry. >> it's probably a combination of the mulch and the compost. >> oh, man. >> which are very, very important as far as adding nutrients to the soil. so the smell dissipates. we have just taken them out of the bag. it's a temporary thing. you definitely want to have compost added to the soil at this time of the year. a good potting mix if you are doing things in the planters. and a mulch which is going to help to retain moisture. but, you know, the real story, i want to remind the viewers to

keep following me thomasgarden guy on twitter. we have some great information there. and thank johnson's for all this wonderful fall beauty. but the real story is, is that this is the time of the year -- i made this little combination here but imagine that if you're entertaining this weekend, a dusty miller two ornamental cabbages and a chrysanthemum and you're done. >> fantastic. >> the snapdragons and dianthus, those are plants that are going to continue to bloom next spring so they will go dormant but they will come back. things like thyme you can be harvesting it all season. but what i wanted to show the viewers was this is a summer planter. what i want to do here is actually dismantle this planter and my purpose is to show the viewers if you're space limited, less say that you have

have a balcony and would be able to -- we are going to take some tulips, absolutely, put the tulips in the soil, okay? >> all ready to do that part. >> and then after we planted our tulips in our container, we're going to put the chrysanthemum on top of those -- >> really? >> mm-hm. >> and suddenly, our summer planter has turned into a fall planter. the ornamental peppers can be popped in. you don't even have to really take them out of container because once they're done, you can segue those with something like pansies or what have you. when this vine goes away, you can add in an ivy or something that's going to be cold-hardy but you have just transformed your summer bouquet.

way to learn history than to truly immerse yourself in it. let's start with this location. take a look at it. you are here in harpers ferry. it doesn't get any more beautiful than that. and it really is amazing when you start to think about the gravity of what happened here. but as you come through you get to learn in all different ways and if you listen very closely you might just hear the sounds of the magpie and that's where greg and terry come in. tell us about the significance of your sound and what you're adding to the event this weekend. >> terry and i do a lot of music around american history and we do an entire program on music from the civil war era. we have done a lot of work on music of the story of john brown. this time around we're focusing on the civil war and the battle of harpers ferry. rufus saxon the commander of the union troops.

so our song help to illustrate the stories. >> reporter: somehow we remember the stories better when they're told with melody. take away. we'll continue to show you part what's going on here and will be going on over the next four days. the magpie singers entertaining us this morning and over the weekend. if you plan to i blur kids out bring your kids out, a specialist will talk about hands on history in archeology. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: so you got quite the setup here. tell me what we're looking at. >> we have original museum artifacts. we ask the children to guess what was this thing used for during the civil war? so things that may look similar today were around during the civil war and let's see if the kids can guess what they have in front of them. >> reporter: who wants to go

first? >> maybe like pictures, like today they have cameras that you can look at old pictures. might be used like that. >> good guess. >> the answer sunday the flip chart. >> they had 3-d in the civil war and if you hold up you can look through the viewer and see the image in 3-d. >> reporter: that's fun. you have a whole table of things here. they are going to be doing a bunch of things this weekend. this is to pique your interest to get to you come out. i'm going to come over and find jeff driscoll. come on over. he is going to talk about family and youth activities. >> good morning. >> reporter: i love this. >> do you? >> reporter: i love it. it's ingenious. tell me what's going on this weekend and activities like this. >> this is a small sampling of what we're going to be offering. we are going to be offering some 12 to 13 activities, one of which is what we call the rats in the cage map.

so kids can play on the map that shows harpers ferry and the area around it with the soldiers. they can move it around as they actually did in the battle or do whatever they want. we have drill activities. we have a small union campsite where kids can see union soldiers, park rangers, cooking and learn about soldiering. >> reporter: wonderful. here's the wonderful thing about harpers ferry. not only are they having a lot of special things going on over next four days to commemorate the sesquicentennial anniversary of the battle of harpers ferry but they always have things going on. david fox is also with the park service. tell us why we need to come this weekend, actually we have told them that. you tell them why we need to come other weekends, as well. >> this place is wonderful. we have over 20 miles of hiking trails, the blue ridge mountains, shenandoah, history, industrial history, transportation history, there's
